1. High-Speed Catamarans vs. Conventional Ferries

Choosing the correct vessel type is the single most critical decision in island travel:

Conventional Ferries (e.g., Blue Star Ferries, Balearia, Jadrolinija)

  • Pros: Enormous open deck areas, smooth sailing through choppy waves (up to 7–8 Beaufort scale), comfortable indoor lounges, cheap deck seating, and lower delay rates.
  • Cons: Slower cruising speed (approx 20–25 knots).
  • Best For: Overnight voyages, travelers prone to motion sickness, and passengers carrying vehicles or oversized gear.

High-Speed Catamarans & Hydrofoils (e.g., SeaJets, Caremar, Liberty Lines)

  • Pros: Cuts travel time in half (cruises at 35–42 knots).
  • Cons: Closed passenger cabins with no open deck access during voyage; highly susceptible to sea spray and motion turbulence; higher fare rates; subject to weather cancellations when Meltemi/Bura winds exceed 8 Beaufort.

2. Port Protocols & Baggage Etiquette

Unlike airport terminals, Mediterranean and Adriatic ferry ports have streamlined check-in procedures:

  1. Electronic Boarding Passes: Over 95% of operators (including Blue Star and Balearia) now support direct QR-code e-tickets on smartphones with no need for physical kiosk exchanges.
  2. Arrival Timing: Foot passengers should arrive 45 minutes prior to scheduled departure. Vehicle drivers must arrive 60–90 minutes early for staging on the dock ramp.
  3. Luggage Racks: When boarding large ferries, heavy suitcases are stored in open racks on the lower vehicle deck sorted by destination island. Take small daypacks containing passports, electronics, and medicine with you to the passenger lounges.
